Abstract

This chapter sets out a broad contextual framework for urban analysis with special reference to three main phases of capitalist development. These are as follows: the nineteenth-century factory and workshop system, twentieth-century mass production, and the emerging twenty-first-century system of cognitive-cultural capitalism.
