Abstract
To achieve predictable and optimal results, the surgeon must adhere to sound diagnostic and therapeutic principles, be skilled in basic surgical techniques, and have proper instrumentation. This chapter discusses the preoperative process including history, exam, family dynamics, consent, and procedural planning. It details intraoperative considerations including instruments, needles, and suture materials, as well as surgical principles from incision through closure. Methods for specific flaps and grafts (skin, oral mucous membrane, ear cartilage, hard palate, and dermis fat) are described in stepwise fashion. Postoperative wound care and healing are also reviewed.
