Abstract

Steinberg, in a continuing dialogue to create greater equity and to challenge previous assumptions, believes we must articulate, identify, name, and break down the power blocs which serve to sustain an inequitable world. In her chapter and by using the work of Fiske, she continues to develop the notion of critical multiculturalism, which she had created with Kincheloe. She argues we need to name the forces which fight against a democratic and diverse multicultural world. She attempts “to call out the white supremacist and patriarchal power blocs” which maintain a dominant cultural stance within an examination of oppression. Steinberg suggests these are two of the guiding components in governing our abilities to identify what is needed in diversity, multicultural dialogues and multicultural education.
