Abstract
Szakács introduces the conceptual backbone of her study, locating it at the intersection of current debates on post-socialism, Europeanisation and educational change in the disciplines of sociology, political science and comparative education. The novelty of her contribution consists of a fresh look at post-socialism inspired by different strands of institutionalist thought in which she takes wider world developments into account, avoiding the internal/national versus external/global dichotomies that prevail in the field. Szakács thus conceptualises post-1989 educational change as a process of gradual institutionalisation of world culture through the symbolic mediation of ‘Europe’, unveiling surprising relationships between cultural globalisation and Europeanisation in post-socialist education. The introduction outlines the methodological choices made in the study, its institutionalist argument and a concise summary of the subsequent chapters.
