Abstract

The key distinction between the thinking of Harold Innis and Marshall McLuhan is in how each perceives the societal shift from a totalizing mechanical technology (originating with the Gutenberg printing press) to an “electronic age” 1 in which communications are made instantaneous through electronic media, which McLuhan has comprising “the telegraph, radio, films, telephone, computer and television.”
