The Slave Trade in the Nineteenth-Century Western Indian Ocean: An Overview

Chapter
Part of the Palgrave Series in Indian Ocean World Studies book series (IOWS)

Abstract

This chapter takes an overview of the slave trade in the nineteenth-century western Indian Ocean, looking at major entrepôt regions and modes of enslavement, types of ships and prices, as well as questions on volume and gender ratio. It is pointed out here that although the volume of trade often receives a great deal of attention, it is meaningless to compare numbers without taking into consideration the mode of transport and type of slave dealing. Furthermore, this chapter also uses nineteenth-century documents to reveal the inseparable nature of the slave and other trades.
