Abstract
The chapter examines party ideologies as one of the most important drivers of their responses to the EU. It classifies parties into party families and positions them along the two most important dimensions of party competition—the socio-economic left–right and the nationalism–cosmopolitanism axes. The chapter than maps party stance on the EU onto their ideologies, aimed at assessing to what extent, and in what way, party positions are value-driven. A party’s ideology proved to be an important source of motivation for a response to the EU. This is due to the specific nature of European issues, related to identity and statehood issues, in the context of these post-communist and post-conflict societies.
