Abstract
Hinge flaps are simple flaps that turnover like the page of a book. They are often used in staged reconstructions of soft tissue defects. They have a rich history dating back to the twentieth century and were used by pioneer plastic surgeons such as Gillies and Joseph for reconstruction of facial injuries from the First World War. Maintaining the blood supply via the subcutaneous pedicle is a key technical point in the planning and execution of these flaps, until they have gained a new blood supply from the recipient bed. Two illustrative cases from the lead author’s practice are presented.
