Abstract

The historical concept of sociability and the French Revolutionary concept of fraternity are critically unpacked in the opening chapter. The legal framework within which voluntary associations of all kinds were controlled in France during the nineteenth century by governments fearful of non-conforming and potentially revolutionary forces provides the context for this scholarly and original study of amateur musical societies and sports clubs in provincial France between 1848 and 1914. Baker recognises that his earlier interpretation of work-related societies (such as livestock insurance societies and mutual aid societies) as risk management strategies is not applicable to recreational associations, such as musical societies and sports clubs. This leads him to ask the intriguing question: was the concept of fraternity the key foundation stone on which sociability was built in nineteenth-century France? The originality of Baker’s answer to this question lies in his incomparable use of the mass of unpublished and hitherto neglected archives in 11 widely-separated departments of France.
