Conclusion: Looking Forward, Looking Back

Abstract

This concluding chapter reflects on key insights brought forth in the preceding chapters and suggests new ways to analytically engage with diasporic media and conflict in a globalised era. Diasporic media has enabled the diaspora community to remain connected with their homeland. It has allowed them to re-connect with each other and find a sense of belonging in new and often unfamiliar Western environments. But since advanced technological infrastructure in the West can assist diasporic media to assume a hegemonic position within the homeland media landscape, they can also become enablers of power exertion and prominence, solidaristic invocation and silencing, and marginalisation. In this way they come to play a performative and participatory role in engaging with and transnationalising conflict. This chapter brings together and further underlines the key arguments of the book and re-states the importance of taking a broader, all-encompassing approach when it comes to analysing diasporic media, migration, transnationalism and conflict.
