Abstract

Caring for the elderly involves maintaining a delicate balance between high morbidity rates and multiple therapies.

In particular, acute neurological illness or orthopedic interventions, and any condition that generally leads to immobilization, can interfere with this balance, posing a high risk of acute exacerbations of chronic diseases or the onset of new pathological conditions.

Rehabilitation may also influence this balance and have an impact on patients’ clinical and functional outcomes. Rehabilitation has an important role in elderly patient management and demands a specific expertise in order to optimize patients’ post-acute functional recovery, helping them to achieve a new balance.
