Nursing Considerations in the Care of Elderly Burn Patients

  • Jason Sheaffer
Chapter

Abstract

Advances in burn care have made survival of large burns more possible throughout the age continuum. Unfortunately mortality for even relatively small burns remains high in the elderly population. A review of burn care considerations in general, with an emphasis on managing comorbidity in the setting of elderly burn care is described herein. Principles of management include basic management of the physical, surgical, psycho-social, and ethical considerations relevant in this population. The use of data from the 2016 National Burn Repository (NBR) is cited as a marker for expected outcomes that can be used for planning care to this vulnerable population.
