Geriatric Thoracic Vascular Injury

Abstract

Thoracic vascular injuries are highly lethal after both blunt and penetrating trauma, regardless of age. In particular, blunt aortic injury still carries an 85% mortality at the scene. A recent revolution has occurred in the diagnosis and treatment of blunt aortic injury for those who reach the hospital alive—replacing screening aortography with CT scanning and open surgery with thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). TEVAR has become the preferred means for treatment of blunt thoracic vascular injuries, resulting in improved survival rates, especially in geriatric patients.
