Cardiac trauma to the geriatric population is rare. A 10-year registry review of the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcomes from 2006 to 2015 showed only 458 patients over 65 with cardiac injury . The geriatric patient is exposed to the same amount of force as their younger counterparts, but has less physiologic reserve to combat the effects of traumatic stress. There are few studies and guidelines about specific management of geriatric cardiac trauma due to its uncommon nature. When comparing the younger myocardium to an aged and injured counterpart, injuries to the elder heart can be difficult to manage with very high rates of mortality.
