Abstract

Present the findings from in-depth studies of 13 interstate conflicts, 40% of the total number of PCs in the ICB Dataset, 40% of the 33 conflicts that have been active in some or most of the years from late 1918 to late 2017. These illustrative cases, from six regional contexts, including conflicts involving major, middle, small and minuscule powers, long-existing and newly independent states, with large, medium and small territory and population, economically advanced, developed and developing, resolved and unresolved, are as follows: Africa (Chad/Libya, Ethiopia/Somalia, Western Sahara) and Americas (Costa Rica/Nicaragua) The salient findings for each Conflict included in these case studies are Historical Roots; Conflict Behavior of Adversaries—Decisions, Decision-Makers, Decision Processes; Conflict-Sustaining Acts by Adversaries; Conflict Management by Adversaries and Mediators; and Attempts at Conflict Resolution.
