Introduction: Toward a New Critical Paradigm for the Study of Culture and Globalization
The introduction surveys the major arguments relating to the three fields of study this book dialogues with—globalization studies, Latin American studies, and film studies—and offers a critical intervention that demonstrates why putting these fields into conversation is productive and revelatory. The goal is to trace out the details of a new critical paradigm for studying globalization and culture via analysis of Latin American cinema. This new paradigm focuses on the deep ambivalence of working within neoliberalism and against it at the same time. And it argues that neoliberalism renders culture a commodity at the same time that communities fight to reinvest cultural struggles with political potential.
