Abstract
The work of the abstract painter Tomma Abts provides an opportunity to examine the ways in which critics seek to support their evaluations of the formal qualities of artworks. The language used in published reviews of her work is analysed in light of Frank Sibley’s observations on the use of metaphor as a tool to communicate aesthetic qualities perceived in an artwork. It also considers how critics justify their evaluations of the formal qualities of non-figurative work.
