Abstract
Contrary to the narrative that underpins the political mobilization of American Evangelicals, British Evangelicals do not see Britain as a Christian country . Nor do they exhibit particular antipathy to any other religious or social group. Hatcher finds that Evangelicals are rather acceptant of trends that have secularized and pluralized British culture over the past half-century. Rather than viewing others as a threat to their status, British Evangelicals see themselves as part of the cultural mainstream . Media and elites, on the other hand, portray Evangelicals as an extremist out-group , usually invoking the American context. This fear of being publicly mocked has a chilling effect on how British Evangelicals engage in civic life.
