Role of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Kidney Repair

Chapter
Part of the Stem Cells in Clinical Applications book series (SCCA)

Abstract

This review is intended to provide basic information on the role of the vascular endothelium in acute and chronic kidney disease. It describes the definition and characteristics of early-outgrowth (or “circulating”) and late-outgrowth endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), the influence of cardiovascular and renal-related risk factors on the numbers and functions of EPC, and the mechanisms by which they are mobilized and home to target tissues. It provides an update on recent developments of EPC in kidney repair. It presents the view that progressive renal disease is a consequence of imbalance between the effects of factors causing loss of renal function and the ability for self-repair and proposes endothelial progenitor cells as a potential candidate for vascular repair to redress this.
