Abstract

In The Years, Woolf uses the London map once again and almost as extensively as in Night and Day. Unlike Night and Day, however, where Woolf focuses on the development of individual characters, in the historical narrative of The Years, which covers half a century, Woolf uses the method of maps to describe the many-levelled development of the modern city. The new vehicles used to get around in the city, the different areas her characters are living in and their various movements about the city are used to expose the conversion of the old patriarchy into a new one, with the First World War as the turning point: Woolf’s utopian visions fade away, and ultimately the women are again marginalised.
