Abstract
In this chapter, Scillio explores a case study of a person successfully making a living from her artistic practice. Selina supports herself doing what she loves – belly dancing. A single mum, her journey has been long and difficult, but she has found a way to be creative and make a living. Key themes discussed include the importance of recognition and artistic audiences as a social context of work. Scillio brings together the insights gleaned from this and previous chapters about “going it alone”: how people make career stories, how this shapes career security and how different social contexts of working for oneself provide resources for stories.
