Abstract

Lee’s parting word in the book is a brief autobiographical reflection on scenes from (recently) post-colonial Singapore that ponders the cultural ambivalence (and reticence) attending much of the analysis through the book. Through scenes of a mission school and the teeming crowds of Chinatown, the anecdote strives to depict the inner life of its (culturally) bifurcated citizenry.
