Abstract

This case presentation describes an elderly patient with osteoarthritis undergoing hip replacement and reviews risks and benefits of the various options for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis. Evidence-based guidelines are reviewed as well as patient-specific and institution-specific factors that influence selection of therapy for VTE prophylaxis for this type of surgery.
