Abstract
This concluding chapter summarizes the main arguments of the book, therefore insisting on the interactive relationship between grievances and political opportunities to produce mobilization, focusing on squatters. It starts with the paradox of the 2002 Uruguayan economic crisis, which did not correlate with a boom of new land invasions in Montevideo, and refers to new political conditions, particularly reduced electoral competition for the urban poor, an electorate currently monopolized by the leftist coalition holding municipal and national government. Finally, it evaluates the outcomes of squatters’ mobilization signaling the limits of the fight for property rights and regularization when inequality and segregation are present.
