Abstract

Various imaging modalities are commonly used in the assessment of painful arthroplasties, including radiographs, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT). Each of these modalities has its own strength and weakness and should be used complementary, if the initially chosen imaging modality is not diagnostic. Periprosthetic complications are commonly encountered in clinical practice with a variety of etiologies including fracture, infection, instability, malposition and malsizing as well as loosening. A profound knowledge of expected normal and pathological appearances of arthroplasties is crucial for every radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist and helps with establishment of the correct diagnosis in those patients.
