Excellence: On the Genealogical Reconstruction of a Rationality

Abstract

In the last few years ‘excellence’ has evolved into a universal, central concept for higher education. Following a Foucauldian genealogy, this chapter turns to discourse analysis in order to reconstruct the pathways of this central term. The analysis is based on key texts from the German and international discourses since the 1950s, including scientific literature, strategic political texts, management literature and the self-descriptions ‘institutions of excellence’. The origins of excellence can be described in terms of a history of the present which aims for a permanent optimization of individuals, collectives, and institutions. Strategies and programmes of excellence in politics and institutions of higher education describe vertical differentiation in terms of both results and objectives.
