Abstract
Conflicts of interest interfere with professional judgment and can compromise the integrity and ethical standards of the research process. Conflicts erode public trust in an era when private nonprofit and profit-based corporations have become the primary sponsors of clinical trials. They may be in the form of maintaining or furthering research support, monetary remuneration, or academic standing. Full disclosure and public transparency may help ameliorate some of the ethical tensions in relationships between researchers and sponsors; however, full disclosure relies on accurate self-reporting by authors and editors.
