Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes chronic infection in most of the patients that it infects, and this chronic infection can lead to severe liver diseases including fatty liver, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. HCV infection of hepatocytes can suppress the host innate immune response, and this suppression plays an important role in the establishment of chronic HCV infection. HCV can also induce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines to cause chronic liver inflammation and cell death. It can also induce endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and hepatocellular proliferation and alter hepatic lipid metabolism. These combined effects of HCV can lead to chronic liver injury and hepatocellular carcinogenesis. In this chapter, we will review the interactions between HCV and its host cells.
