Abstract
Predictions by the author on the future of the therapeutic applications for umbilical cord blood are provided in this chapter. While the use of umbilical cord blood as a graft source for pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is expected to grow, uncertainty is developing in the adult arena. Prospective studies are needed to clarify the differences in outcome between umbilical cord blood and haploidentical grafts. The therapeutic potential of umbilical cord blood for treatment of nonmalignant, non-hematopoietic disorders such as stroke or cerebral palsy is currently under exploration.
