Abstract
This personal and professional journey explores the relevance of the outdoors as part of the modern Girl Scout experience. It highlights two volunteer-run outdoor programmes—a residential backpacking camp and a backpack interest group. In addition, it includes key outcomes from recent research that investigated two fundamental questions: Are Girl Scouts still getting outdoors? And what difference does it make if they do? The author’s intention has been to dispel the myths that Girl Scouts only sell cookies and make macaroni art. She shines light on the important role the outdoors continues to play in the Girl Scout experience as it has for over a hundred years. Girl Scouts are venturing outdoors, seeking challenges whilst developing their leadership skills, and serving their community.
