Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis is a cost-effective modality that offers the patient the opportunity to receive dialysis in the home setting, which gives the patient more freedom to travel and work, and preserve the vascular access for future use. Percutaneous placement of peritoneal dialysis catheters using fluoroscopy and ultrasound guidance is associated with high technical success rate and low risk of complications. The procedure is performed in the outpatient setting which has the advantages of avoiding the inefficiencies related to the operating room scheduling and the need for general anesthesia. It also allows for expeditious catheter placement within 24–48 h, which is an essential component in urgent-start dialysis programs. In this chapter, the authors will discuss the technique of placement in details and will outline the indications, contraindication and outcomes of this technique compared to laparoscopic surgical placement.
