Abstract

Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome is a common etiology of lateral knee pain in runners. Renne first described iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome in 1975 in the US Marine Corps recruit population. ITB syndrome at the knee is caused by friction between the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral condyle. Repetitive irritation can lead to chronic inflammation and pain.
