Abstract

Crystal-induced arthropathies are a group of joint diseases caused by deposition of crystals into joints and include gouty arthritis due to monosodium urate (MSU) crystals and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPP) crystal deposition disease. Gouty arthritis is the most common crystal-induced arthropathy and occurs in 2–3% of the adult population. MSU crystals in gouty arthritis result from hyperuricemia, which can be caused by overproduction or underexcretion of urate. Crystal-induced arthropathies may present as acute, intermittent arthritis initially and progress into chronic arthritis. Diagnosis of crystal-induced arthropathies is made by crystal exams of the synovial fluid. Treatment of gouty arthritis includes management of acute arthritis and uric acid-lowering therapy.
