Abstract

The diagnosis of small bowel perforation early treatment, namely abdominal exploration and either repair or resection is quite uniform regardless of the cause. Patients frequently present with frank peritoneal signs obviating the need for further extensive laboratory testing or imaging. The list of possible etiologies is quite exhaustive. Axiomatically, it is incumbent on the operator to closely follow the pathologic results in order to plan for further treatment accordingly. This chapter will discuss the causes, diagnostic modalities, and operative conduct as well what to do in the occasional, frustrating case of inability to find a perforation during exploration.

The road to the operating room does not always pass through the CT scanner
