Abstract

Hayek complained that Cannan and his fellow British-Austrians had failed to develop ‘economic liberalism to its ultimate consequences with the same ruthless consistency as Mises.’ According to Caldwell this was a reference to Liberalism in the Classical Tradition in which Mises stated that ‘The program of [classical] liberalism, therefore, if condensed into a single word, would have to read: property … The victory of Fascism in a number of countries is only an episode in the long series of struggles over the problem of property.’ Hayek and Mises promoted the deflation that facilitated Hitler’s rise to power; and other Austrians, such as Sennholz and Boettke, continued to demand deflation.
