Abstract

Whiplash is an increasingly common injury and is often associated with motor vehicle collisions, falls, accidents, sports injuries, and assaults. Acute whiplash usually responds well to conservative management, although chronic whiplash becomes more complicated to diagnose and treat. Identification of the mechanism of injury is key, followed by an in-depth understanding of the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal anatomy to correctly identify and treat the pathology. Ruling out devastating neurologic injury, instability, and fracture is of critical importance on initial evaluation. Using an algorithmic approach in the treatment of neck and back pain, associated with whiplash, ensures best practices.
