Abstract

Mononeuritis multiplex is a nervous system disorder involving damage to at least two separate nerve areas. Causes are multifactorial and can be linked with a variety of metabolic, infectious, rheumatologic, hematologic, and malignant disorders. Patients present with symptoms of neuropathic pain including numbness, tingling, burning, loss of sensation, and loss of motor function. Diagnosis is confirmed by electromyogram, nerve biopsy, or nerve conduction tests. Common nerves affected include axillary, peroneal, radial, ulnar, femoral, median, and sciatic nerves. Treatment can be a long process and begins first with identifying and treating the underlying disorder (if applicable). In addition, anticonvulsants and antidepressants also have a role in reduction of neuropathic pain.
