The EpiSkin™ Human Epidermis Model for In Vitro Skin Corrosion of Test Chemicals
The EpiSkin™ skin corrosion method is an internationally accepted test method used to detect the skin corrosion properties of chemicals. The test method has been shown to be robust, transferable, and reproducible in validation studies organised with three laboratories. The overall accuracy of the EpiSkin™ test method in distinguishing between corrosive and non-corrosive chemicals was 92.4% with a large set of 113 chemicals through a systematic in vivo Draize comparative evaluation for safety assessment, delivering results that matched very well with corresponding in vivo data. Furthermore, the accuracy in distinguishing between UN GHS Category 1A, Category 1B-and-1Cand non-corrosive chemicals was 83.1% when considering the L’Oréal data combined with the EURL-ECVAM data. It could be regarded as a primary source of information concerning the skin corrosion properties of the tested chemical and be used in combination with a battery of assays, such as the EpiSkin™ skin irritation method, in any initiative aimed at developing integrated testing strategies for full evaluation of local skin effects.
