Abstract
This chapter is used to contextualise Cicero Illustratus within two important intellectual strands, in relation to which Toland shaped his treatment of the subject: the history of editing Cicero’s complete works, and the early modern traditions of scholarship, in particular the Battle of the Books. The themes to which Toland would particularly respond—the rise of editorial authority in the Ciceronian editions, and the rise of the Critic in scholarship—are identified, and the challenges facing Toland are elucidated.
