Proposed Design of Bicycle Lanes Around Jakarta’s East Flood Canal

Abstract

Jakarta’s transportation is dominated by motorized vehicles powered by fossil fuel. The city has a poor provision of sidewalks, discouraging people from walking even to reach a nearby destination. No bicycle lanes are provided in the city, minimizing the number of people riding bicycles in the city. This situation has been creating heavy air pollution in the capital city. In order to reduce the city’s air pollution and to improve its environment, a number of Car Free Day (CFD) programmes have been launched by the city authority since a few years ago. This programme is reported to have helped in reducing the air pollution somewhat. Along with the development of Jakarta’s 23.5 km long East Flood Canal, known as ‘Kanal Banjir Timur’ (KBT) in East Jakarta, the canal banks have also been developed to provide some public facilities, including bicycle lanes. However, the limited connection of the cycle lanes to the other parts of the city has discouraged people from using them. This study aims to establish an urban planning guideline to manage the development of a bicycle lane system in the city. The case study is taken in a selected area around the KBT in East Jakarta, In order to encourage people to take bicycles to work, this study tries to find out possible connection lanes between the KBT bicycle lanes and some of the public facilities in this area. Along with the improvement of the public transport system, adding some bicycle lanes and pedestrian short cuts between public facilities is likely to reduce the number of motorised vehicles in the city, thus improving the air quality of the city.
