Classification of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Children

Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract

The classification of the pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can sometimes be challenging and uncertain. For decades, gastroenterologists have attempted to classify the phenotype and disease type of patients in order to aid with treatment choice, prediction of outcomes, and research. From consensus meetings in Vienna and Montreal, the evolution of the classification of IBD is a fascinating story. Advances in classification systems have aided in advances in our understanding of IBD in terms of genetic and clinical research and helped guide clinical practice. Most recently, the Paris modification of the Montreal classification has attempted to address the intricacies of childhood-onset IBD by specifying unique phenotypes in this population. The first part of the chapter will review various guideline documents, which aim to assist physicians when applying a phenotypic classification to pediatric patients with IBD. The second part of this chapter will describe the development and refinement of IBD phenotypic classifications.
