Upper Endoscopy for GI Fellows

Abstract

Performing a high-quality Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) requires competence in the procedure to ensure the appropriate identification of normal and abnormal findings, and performing diagnostic and therapeutic maneuvers as indicated. This chapter will review the technique of upper endoscopy focusing on how to perform an efficient and complete examination with discussion of key normal and pathologic findings. With recent paradigm shift toward value-based care emphasizing quality more than quantity, along with payment and policy changes mandating the endoscopists to meet and report quality metrics, we believe this chapter on how to perform a high-yield upper endoscopic examination will be very useful for all the endoscopists.
