Neurocritical Care for the Advanced Practice Clinician

Abstract

Advance Practice Clinicians are proving care to patients in Neurocritical care units around the country. It is important for APCs to know how to effectively recognize, manage and treat conditions encountered in the Neurocritical care unit. This chapter will outline the most commonly seen neuromuscular conditions in the Neurocritical Care Unit. Topics include Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Critical Illness Neuromyopathy. Special consideration in this chapter will be given to the recognition and management of neuromuscular respiratory failure, which can be the most life threatening complication seen in patients with neuromuscular diseases.
