Combined Commuting Mode for Residents in Big Cities by Public Health—A Case Study of Xi’an

Abstract

In recent years, the proportion of sub-healthy people living in urban environments increased rapidly in many of China’s big cities. Evidence has shown that commuting, an important part of people’s travel, is closely related to people’s health. This is especially true in big cities, where due to a longer commuting time than small and medium-sized cities and more complex traffic situations means that the link between commuting and health is more pronounced. The research is lacking on the linkage between commute patterns and public health. The author took Xi’an as a study case. Through the study of combined commuting mode by the aspect of public health, and the corresponding policies, the author try to fill theories about healthy urban planning, and provide reference to other similar cities. The author used simple random sampling method to questionnaire survey and interviews, and a total of 250 questionnaires was put out, 238 questionnaires was taken back. The effective recycling rate was 95.2 % And the samples were classified by their daily activities, so that the health of people classified is basically caused by people’s commuting differences. The commuting distance, commuting time, and the body energy consumption are analyzed in this thesis, and a hierarchical analysis model is made for healthy commuting ways, by which people’s health with different commuting tools was calculated. Furthermore, factors affecting residents commuting tools were studied. Based on all of above, the healthy combined commuting mode is put out, and corresponding policies were put forward such as improving the slow traffic system, strengthening the mixed level of land use and changing of spatial development strategy in the city.
