Abstract
A complete algebra for maps includes both data types and operations over types. In this chapter, we introduce the three fundamental map operations, denoted the power operations for maps. The power operations are significant because all map operations can be expressed in terms of the three power operations. The power operations allow one to distinguish all regions in a spatial partition, distinguish all faces in all regions, and alter label values. Because regions in spatial partitions are defined based on their labels, this allows users to alter regions in a partition.
