Pathologies Encountered in Explanted Native Hearts

The Pathology of Cardiac Transplantation

Abstract

This is one of the most important chapters for cardiac transplant pathologists as it treats the main cardiac diseases encountered in explanted native hearts in both adult and pediatric patients: ischemic heart disease, myocardial disease, congenital heart defects.

Pathology evaluation of native hearts is an essential source of information for both pathologists and clinicians, although sometimes underrated. The chapter is intended to be a guide for pathologists through the complex pathologic substrates of these diseases, some very common, some rare or even very rare. Certain topics are treated in detail: the importance of identifying the etiology of the diseases underlying heart failure; standardized protocols for macroscopic and histologic examination of the heart; standardized criteria for pathologic diagnosis; new insights in pathology; updated literature data.

It is emphasized that using anatomo-clinical correlation is an essential tool to reinforce the contribution of pathology to diagnosis and understanding of cardiac diseases.
