Operative Dictations in Ophthalmology

Abstract

For patients who develop posterior capsular opacification but cannot sit for/tolerate laser Nd: YAG capsulotomy, surgical capsulotomy performed under sedation/general anesthesia is a viable option. In pediatric patients who have undergone cataract extraction/lensectomy and have developed posterior capsular opacification, it is necessary to relieve the visual obstruction to prevent amblyopia. The ophthalmologist should be prepared to perform an anterior vitrectomy, should vitreous prolapse following capsulotomy. Patients and their guardian(s) should be adequately informed of the risks, benefits, and alternatives of the procedure, as well as the possible need for further surgery.
