Abstract
The mission of modern sports dentistry is to maintain or improve the oral health of athletes of all ages. Improvement in oral health will result in improvement in overall health in athletes which will improve performance, endurance, and healing while participating in sport. Improvement of oral health will also positively affect long-term health and esthetics and overall quality of life. Modern sports dentistry strives to identify the challenges to oral health that are common to the general public and those that are unique to athletes to create strategies to mitigate these challenges and thus improve athlete oral health.
