Primary Care for Emergency Physicians

Abstract

A number of patients present to primary care clinics, urgent care clinics, and emergency departments with ocular complaints, ranging from the benign and self-limited to immediately sight threatening. This chapter summarizes the components of the differential diagnosis most relevant to these settings as well as describing the key portions of the ophthalmologic exam. Finally, the management of a wide breadth of ophthalmologic conditions, with emphasis added on the necessity and timing of any indicated specialist consultation, is discussed.
