Perioperative Risk and Management of Surgical Patients

Risk management and safety planning are important for all healthcare organizations. Risk involves potential harm or loss, can be costly, can be traumatic for everyone involved, and must be identified and measured before it can be managed. This chapter provides an overview of risk management and a method of quantifying surgical risk using Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA). Other aspects of surgical risk management which are discussed include risk assessment tools; scope of practice, credentialing, and competency; the Universal Protocol; safety culture; equipment and technology; and the role of the second victim.
